Learn the requirements and documentation needed to obtain a Florida certificate of title.

To obtain a Florida certificate of title, you must provide proof of identity, proof of ownership, a completed title application, and payment of all applicable fees. Additional documentation may be required depending on your vehicle and transaction.

At a minimum, you must provide the following:

  • Proof of identity: A valid driver license, state-issued identification card, or passport.
  • Proof of ownership: A Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO), an out-of-state title, or a Florida title.
  • A completed Form HSMV 82040 for motor vehicles and trailers, mobile homes, or vessels.
  • Payment of all applicable title and sales tax fees.

If you are purchasing a license plate, you must also provide proof of valid Florida insurance, along with a valid driver license or identification card, and pay any applicable registration fees. Additional insurance information is available on the FLHSMV Insurance page.

Military service members and veterans may be eligible for additional title-related services and information. Visit the FLHSMV Military and Veteran Services pagefor more details.

If the vehicle was previously titled or registered in another state, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be verified to confirm that the vehicle matches the ownership documents. VIN verification may be completed using Form HSMV 82042or Section 8 of Form HSMV 82040.
