Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez joined students and faculty at Miami Regional University in recognition of Constitution Day, taking part in a conversation about the U.S. Constitution, civic responsibility, and the importance of preparing the next generation to understand the institutions and principles that shape American government. Constitution Day is observed each September 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution in Philadelphia in 1787.
During the event, Fernandez spoke with students about the Constitution as more than a historic document. He emphasized that understanding the rights, responsibilities, and structure of government established by the Constitution helps young people become more informed participants in their communities and better understand the role they can play in public life.
“The Constitution is more than a document in our history. It is the foundation of the freedoms, rights, and responsibilities that define our nation,” said Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez. “When young people understand the principles our country was built upon, they are better prepared to participate in their communities, ask important questions, and appreciate the responsibilities that come with citizenship.”
Fernandez also highlighted the importance of civic education and encouraged students to remain engaged in the communities around them. He noted that public service can take many forms and that strengthening the next generation begins by giving young people the knowledge and confidence to understand how their government works.
Fernandez thanked Miami Regional University, its leadership, faculty, and students for the opportunity to commemorate Constitution Day and participate in a meaningful conversation about citizenship, civic engagement, and the principles that continue to guide the United States.
