Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez announced that his office recovered more than $20 million in previously unpaid tangible personal property taxes last year through a compliance initiative launched when his administration took office.

The initiative strengthened the review of delinquent accounts, increased taxpayer outreach, and ensured outstanding obligations were addressed consistently and lawfully. The Tax Collector’s Office is continuing this work and pursuing additional unpaid accounts throughout Miami-Dade County.

“When we took office, we made it a priority to strengthen accountability and recover money already lawfully owed to our community,” said Fernandez. “Through the dedication of our team, we recovered more than $20 million last year. We are proud of that result, but our work is not finished.”

Tangible personal property taxes apply to equipment, furniture, machinery, fixtures, and other property used by businesses. The Tax Collector’s Office does not determine property values or set tax rates. Its responsibility is to collect lawfully assessed taxes and distribute the funds to Miami-Dade County, its 34 municipalities, the School Board, and other taxing authorities.

“We work closely with these businesses and our community. In the case that they want to make a payment plan, we’re here to help because, at the end of the day, small businesses are the ones that create jobs and career opportunities. We need to do our job, but we are here to help all of them,” Fernandez said.

“The overwhelming majority of businesses meet their responsibilities, and they should not be placed at a disadvantage by those that do not,” Fernandez continued. “These funds go toward police, fire, schools, and the services we depend on every day.” Fernandez added.

The ongoing initiative reflects Fernandez’s commitment to protecting public funds, promoting fairness among taxpayers, and ensuring revenue lawfully owed reaches the public agencies and essential services it supports.
