Learn the requirements for titling and registering your vehicle after becoming a Florida resident.

If you have recently established residency in Florida, you are required to title and register your vehicle within 30 days. You must also obtain Florida motor vehicle insurance before completing the registration process.

If your vehicle was previously titled or registered in another state, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be verified to confirm that the vehicle matches the ownership documents. If your out-of-state title is held by a lienholder, you must contact the lienholder and request that the title be transferred to Florida by submitting Form HSMV 83060.

To verify the VIN, submit either Form HSMV 82042or complete Section 8 of Form HSMV 82040.

The VIN inspection must be completed by our office or one of the following authorized individuals:

  • A military police officer.
  • A law enforcement officer from any U.S. state.
  • A licensed Florida motor vehicle dealer.
  • A DMS compliance examiner or a Tax Collector employee or agent.
  • A Florida commissioned notary public.

Vehicles, vessels, and trailers imported from outside the United States must be inspected by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV)before visiting a Miami-Dade County Office of the Tax Collector.
